So close and yet most definitely another country, where you will find vibrant cities and pretty towns and villages to explore.
Alternatively, just jump in the car and head for the border and see where you end up and what you discover. It could be a tiny restaurant with tasty Basque specialities on the menu or at the other end of the spectrum an outlet village with bargains to be snapped up.
Perhaps just dip you toe in the water as it were and pop over for lunch.
Hondarribia (Fuenterrabía in Spanish) is one of the prettiest towns in Basque country and well worth a visit in its own right, never mind as a lunch destination.
A particularly nice way to arrive is to take the little water taxi across the bay from Hendaye here in France. Once there you have a wide choice of pinxtos bars and restaurants to choose from.
Perhaps after lunch take a walk up to explore the delightful town and its citadel.
San Sebastian (Donastia in Basque) is a little further afield but well worth a visit.
It is a foodie paradise with the highest concentration of Michelin stars in the world at 16 and currently includes No 6 in the World Top 10. While more modestly, the Old Town (Parte Vieja) is its social heartland with cobbled streets packed with bars serving the very best pinxtos.
At the western end of La Concha bay the 100 year old Igeldo furnicular railway will take you to a wonderful look out spot for the best view across the bay to the old town.
