The Pyrenees is the heartland of French rugby. The national stadium, may be situated the north of France but there is no question that the majority of ‘XV de France’ are born and bred in the shadow of the Pyrenees.
There are many first division teams within reach such as Biarritz, Toulouse, Bayonne and Dax.
Pages in the local papers are devoted to the game and Pau rugby club regularly play in front of crowds of up to 10,000. The atmosphere is good humoured with plenty of singing not to mention mulled wine to keep out the cold.
For any major game, entire towns and villages will stop while everyone gathers wherever there is live coverage to be found.
