Throughout the year, there is always a sporting event, fete or some other excuse for a celebration. Here are just a few to whet your appetite:
There is theatre and music in the streets with the grand carnival procession weaving its way around the streets on the Saturday. On Sunday things wind down with a market for local producers, an Apéritif cantèra and the chance to sing while enjoying a glass or two followed by something delicious to eat.
Sample the hams at the market and wander along the stalls surrounding the market along the bank of the river Nive other wonderful local produce such as peppers from Espelette, foie gras, oysters, Basque cakes and spices. Enjoy the free music as bands play in the streets and the famous Basque flute marching bands pass by.
During France’s Feast of Ascension bank holiday weekend, Bayonne organises its Chocolate Days (Les Journées du Chocolat) in honour of this delicacy. A must for gourmets!
Cheese is the star and you can learn to taste cheese like a fine wine. A competition honours the season's best whether pure sheep's milk cheese, cow’s milk cheese, goat’s milk cheese or mixed-milk cheese. Enjoy traditional singing and dancing - in Bearnese, French and Spanish
